A Voice from the Darkness

Hello, dear readers!

I know, I know... it's been forever. But after the harrowing ordeal of writing two novels in such a short time span, and then jumping right in to my first signing event, my brain was fried. The decompression time was much needed. I powered through NaNoWriMo (Yay, me!) and now, with the holidays approaching, it is time for introspection and planning for the year to come. You see, dear readers, I have many irons that I intend to put into my fire, in addition to continuing my writing.
For those of you who are fans of The Tribe, worry not. More is coming, although the order I intended to write the series is shifting slightly, I think. Tank is an infuriatingly persistent voice and his story may follow Matchetehew's.
If you haven't been following along via my newsletter, you might not know, but I am working on my first contemporary romance - a taboo priest story - as well as two other PNR series AND I've just committed to a PNR anthology to be published next summer. There is much to come! So if I am quiet through the new year, just know that I am behind a keyboard, clacking away and I'll be back on the first, hopefully with my ducks in a row and an announcement to be made. To keep up, feel free to sign up for my monthly newsletter or join my Facebook fan group of faithful harlots. Thank you all for following along and happy holidays from Wright's Holler.

Carolina Book Fest 2016

If you haven't already seen on Facebook, Carolina Book Fest was amazing! If you weren't there, you were missed and if you were, I hope you had as much fun as I did! For a new author's first signing, I was overwhelmed and even got a little misty when my very first fan approached me teary-eyed for an autograph and a picture. Here's a few highlights and I hope to see you at a signing near you!

Blurb:

Before the white man settled the Appalachians, he stood over the people of the Tribe, providing all they needed to flourish in the shadow of the mountains.
The many tribes have given him many different names. Wakan Tanko. Maheo. To the people that first hunted the corner of Appalachia known to later generations as Wright’s Holler, he was Weshemoneto, the Great Spirit.
To Anna Madeline Wright, he would simply be Wes.
Born in the holler that bore her name, “Annie” Wright came from people that had learned to live on the land, people who believed in the magic saturating the woods around them. People who knew how to survive.
Circumstance of birth gave her power. Her skills gave her respect. Her magic gave them hope. In a town not yet influenced by the progress of the industrial revolution, Annie was a pauwau. A witch.
The winter of 1836 hit the town of McAllen hard and with her people in danger of annihilation, Annie called on the spirits for the power to save them. Her desperation called Weshemoneto himself . When they collided, she had to make a choice: Lose her town or lose her heart.
What happened next would become the stuff of legend for centuries to come.

About the Author:

Harper L. Jameson was born in south eastern Ohio and raised on stories of the family seat in the holler–a tiny hamlet nestled in the shadow of the Appalachians. Her imagination ran wild, fueled on tales of folklore and superstitions…of Indian burial sites and haunted woods where magic still runs free. Starting with her debut novel “The Spirit”, she’s putting a new spin on paranormal romance by bringing the old legends back from our forgotten past. She currently lives in North Carolina with her husband and children, but she never really left the holler. No one ever does.

The Holler

Blurb:

It’s been nearly 200 years since the ice storm that almost destroyed McAllen. Sheriff Jessica Attwood was born there, in a little valley in the Ohio Appalachians known as Wright’s Holler. If she isn’t careful, she’ll die there.
McAllen has a morgue full of bodies, a file of missing persons dating back decades and a sheriff that is determined to find out what is happening to her town. Her investigation leads her to the half-breed mountain man, Misignwa, and her reality is thrown into a chaos that only makes sense when she’s in his arms.
The Misignwa has stayed out of it. His job is to protect the forests of his ancestors, enduring the scorn of a population almost completely unchanged by progress. The problems of the white men aren’t his concern. Not until they come into his woods and duty brings him face to face with the local sheriff, a woman he’s watched from the shadows for years, drawn to in a way he can’t explain.
Jessica’s investigation pulls her deeper into Wright’s Holler, to a world of lost magic and small town legends–legends that tell of spirits roaming the woods, of lost witches and a battle between good and evil that has raged for centuries. As her fascination with Misignwa grows, something is calling her into the forest, into his arms and onto the front lines.
Wild animal, crazed woodsman… Jessica’s guesses about the killer’s identity are as thick as the trees but as the line between the worlds starts to blur, the superstitious townsfolk voice another theory from a time when magic wasn’t just for fairy tales. Something’s stalking the witches of the holler. And it wants Jessica.

Don't Look Back in Anger...

I told myself I wasn't going to post about this. I told myself I could take the high road. I never was a very good liar, but I can still speak my mind with some measure of decorum.

Picture if you will... a naive, young and as-yet-unpublished author, signing a contract to contribute her very first short story to the anthology of a brand spanking new boutique publishing company. This author made sure there were no moneys exchanged, no exclusive rights to be reverted if things went south. And under the same conditions, she signed a contract with the same company for her first novel as well.
This is where our story turns dark.
After having made commitments to release ARCs to some 60 blogs, this starry-eyed little author realized that her publisher had dropped off the face of the earth. After multiple attempts to reach the publisher for guidance and the date to release the ARCs looming, the author made the choice to cancel the contract with the publisher. Some days later, the publisher resurfaced, apologetically stating personal reasons for her absence and assuring the author that her book would be published as promised. The publisher, it seemed, had not yet been aware of the contract cancellation that had been submitted. Once made aware of the cancellation, the publisher ceased all communication with the author.
However, the short story remained in the publisher's hands and the author saw no harm in waiting to let the anthology publish, despite having taken the initiative to publish the story herself as a standalone. More visibility could never hurt, right?
Fast forward 4 (yes.. 4) months.
After multiple delays, the anthology was still un-published, despite promises from the publisher. Promises that always followed another lengthy and unexplained disappearance. The author stayed quiet. Until the more than 30 other authors began to voice their concern.
Finally, the starry-eyed author had enough and cancelled her contract for the short story, giving 30 days notice as per the contract terms. That 30 days will be met on 9/22. Still, there has been no response or acknowledgment from the publisher.
In the days and weeks that followed, other authors followed suit, their attempts to contact the publisher met with silence. Emails, phone calls, registered mail.. even posts to her personal FB wall which the publisher was still active on garnered them no more insight as to the demise of the project. Until the project's group author page was abruptly deleted.
Now, the starry-eyed author and the 30-some others who had contributed are left in confused anger at the time and energy spent needlessly on a project that would never see fruition. The less-than-happy contributors are scrambling to push contract cancellations through and have their names and any trace of the project removed from the few places it was actually posted.
Hours have now been spent trying to retrieve copyrights, delete teasers and promo posts, removing entries from various databases..as well as contacting reviewers to let them know the book is actually not coming. All with no contact from the publisher. The authors are now banded in solidarity, pulling together in the hopes of moving on with their work and their careers despite the disappointing experience - a first time experience for many of them- and one that has left them wary of small publishing houses and the market in general.

 tl:dr
If it seems too good to be true, it is. If you bite off more than you can chew, say so. And when the horse is dead, stop beating it. I am no longer associated in any way with Stay Classy Publications, its owner, or its now defunct project "The Thing That Turned Me: An Anthology".

There are many publishers out there like this and I'm only grateful that the cost to the authors was only in talent and effort - though the price of those alone is immeasurable. To those who have yet to run into this all-too-common issue in the writing world, I can only say: Do your research. Know who your dealing with. And always trust your gut.

Cavendum est scriptor.

Writer beware.

2016 Summer Indie Book Awards: The Spirit Nomination

**Thank you for the nomination! More information on the book awards can be found below**

The cold of winter is setting in, at least for those of us in the northern Hemisphere of the world. But we at Metamorph Publishing aren’t letting that get us down! We’re already looking forward to a sizzling summer, and we’re here to announce our first annual Indie Book Awards!
You heard that right, a summer book awards! The event officially begins on January 1 st of each year, and nominations will be accepted through midnight CST on August 31 st each year. Voting will begin on September 1 st and end on September 10th each year.
“What’s the big deal,” you ask? “There are all kinds of contests out there.” And you’re right, there are hundreds, probably thousands of book awards. But many of them are only for unpublished authors, or authors who only write in certain narrow genres, or for authors who have never published before in a particular genre. Plus, there are plenty of them that charge an entry fee, some of which are prohibitive to authors who publish independently, without the backing of a large and powerful publishing house.
So, we’re hoping to do something different with the Summer Indie Book Awards! Entry is free, and nominations will be accepted from any indie or small-press author, regardless of their current published or non-published state, or what genre they write in. We are accepting donations of print or e-books, author swag or novelty items (bookmarks, pens, keychains, etc.), but donation is not required for nomination. We’re taking nominations from authors as well as from readers, and authors can nominate their own books; we only ask that authors who do so also nominate a fellow indie author. Nominations can be made using this form:

http://goo.gl/forms/T1L8sQJGVx

while donations can be made at:

http://goo.gl/forms/6DkAK4MeqI

Feel free to join up with the event on Facebook at:

https://www.facebook.com/events/1099924726693772  and LIKE the official Facebook page of the Summer Indie Book Awards at https://www.facebook.com/summerindiebookawards You can also sign up for the newsletter at: http://eepurl.com/bL43cf so you can stay up to date with all the latest news!

ABOUT THE MIRRORMASTERS:

Leah Ellis never knew why she was found abandoned on the beach at two years old. Content with her adoptive family and small town life, she hadn't thought much about it over the years. That is, until her life takes a bizarre turn when she begins seeing images in mirrors she can’t explain--cloaked figures using powers that manifest like lightning bolts, or flash-frozen beaches on another world beneath a purple sky. She practices mirror-gazing, driven to understand these images and their possible connection to her forgotten past, and discovers that it’s kind of addictive with its wild, boundless power coursing through her veins. Soon, she learns to control what the mirror shows her. When new neighbors move in, Leah is shocked that they're dead ringers for the people in her visions. According to Brian, with the gorgeous ice-blue eyes, and his father, she is a MirrorMaster--an alien with a gift that lets her travel through mirrors, even to worlds light years away. Her birth parents sent them to take her from Earth back to her homeworld of Jantyr, a planet she doesn’t remember. They’ve searched for her ever since she disappeared. But Leah’s long-lost birth sister, a sorceress, activated an ancient device to trigger a cataclysm on Jantyr as a bid to consolidate her own power. Leah must return to Jantyr, master her newfound ability in order to locate and wield crystals that will disable the device, and thwart her sister’s plans. Otherwise, the destruction will consume the entire galaxy, including Earth and everyone she loves. THE MIRRORMASTERS is available on:

EXCERPT:

Strange things happen in Sea Cliff Heights every single year on this date, June 15th. Mysterious pulses of light flickered in the forest. Not-quite-solid figures appeared in the cemetery one second and disappeared the next. All day, I couldn’t shake the intuition that this year would bring something much worse than the usual weirdness, much worse than the usual gibes about how it began thirteen years ago, the same night my parents found me abandoned on the beach. "Let’s watch something light — not a horror movie," I said. "Leah, Leah, Leah." My brother David shook his head and scooted closer to Kara, my best friend, on their loveseat. They shared a conspiratorial grin. "Don’t tell me you want to watch some lame comedy when we can have a slasher fest. It’s tradition.” A shiver raced down my spine at the mental image the idea conjured, one of chilling music, strangled sobs and hitching breaths, followed by silenced screams. Tonight also marked the town tragedy of the 1870s, when strangers murdered the Stanford twins, the mayor’s daughters. Of course David would insist we do something scary to commemorate the anniversary. "Come on!" I shot him a pleading look. "I’m sure you breezed through exams, but I took three AP finals this week and fielded a million alien jokes today. Enough already — I deserve a break from crazy.” "Just go out to the cemetery with us," Kara said, her eyes sparkling. "We won’t do anything risky, I promise.” Sure. Why wait for trouble to find us when we could seek it out and bring it right here? Glancing out the sliding glass doors toward the church beyond, I couldn’t help checking for signs of unusual activity. My hands fidgeted, and I fought to still them. I thought I could just make out the sound of otherworldly voices speaking in urgent whispers outside. A gust of wind rustled the palm trees, obscuring any other noise and causing moonlight and shadows to flit across the lawn. Every muscle in my body tensed. Whatever might lurk out there, we’d be safer staying away from it.

Her debut novel, Beyond the Sun was published April 2013 by Bayou Brew Publishing. She recently was named to Amazon's best seller list in the Fantasy/Epic category. Sandra's second book in this series entitled Beyond Time was released earlier this spring in time for the Romantic Times Convention in New Orleans where she was a featured author at the Book Fair. She has since left Bayou Brew Publishing to embark on the next chapter of her writing career, Independent Publishing. As of this time she has re-released both books in e-book and paperback formats. They can be found on Amazon.com. Sandra is currently working on her third book in her Dark Order of the Dragon Series.

This is it... I'm an Author: It's the OFFICIAL Release Day for "The Spirit"

It's June 15th, dear readers, and that means that "The Spirit" has gone live on Amazon! The Appalachians are a place of mystery, even today but this is a journey into their past- into a world of Native legends and rural magic, before the turn of progress stole the enchantment from our world. Where one woman risks everything to save the people she loves. The asking price of their salvation? Her heart. Welcome to Wright's Holler.

EXCERPT:
Wes’s brows shot into his hairline, still reeling from hearing the words on her lips and not fully grasping what she was asking him until her hands moved over his chest. Her seared palm throbbing with a humming current where it lay over his heart. His lips peeled back off of teeth sharpening with his desire. “I would not take you while you are weakened, ni’wa,” he tried arguing, but it was too late. Her need filtered to his senses, a heady perfume that the animal in him wasn’t going to let go unanswered.
“You make me strong, Wes,” Annie insisted, face tipping up to brush her lips to his throat. “The first time was to trap you,” she frowned, her guilt still weighing heavy on her. “This time, I just want to love you, n’ I want you to love me. No traps. No tricks. Just us for however long we got.” Annie took a deep breath and took the chance, her hands smoothing down the muscled plane of his chest until she reached his answer.

Countdown to Extinction?

I have noticed - more so now that I have completed my first book- that the number of Paranormal Romance authors seems to be declining, as is the number of those who still read the genre. Everywhere I notice readers asking their followers and friends for new book recommendations only to specify "no PNR". It begs the question: is the genre over-saturated with shifters and vampires? Is the subject matter getting too outrageous? Is there no new territory to cover? Is the magic gone?

I choose to believe it's all of the above. Beginning with Twilight (We all read it. Denial only makes it hurt worse)  we were all pulled into fantastic worlds of evil creatures turned good by the power of love. It was magic when we're all consigned to the mundane. It let us dream that there was a werewolf bad boy waiting in the shadows to sweep us off our feet, even when we had kids screaming in the backseat and dinner to get on the stove. For me, at least, it wasn't just the idea of romance in and of itself. Real romance is still out there; I believe that. It's the idea that there are things in the shadows that might see us the way no billionaire playboy with a perfect body ever would.

Shameless Self Promotion

Funny, it doesn't seem so shameless now that I have something to promote. Now that "The Spirit" has reached completion and the pre-order files are submitted to Amazon, I can finally, confidently call myself an author without feeling like a fraud. I wrote a book. All 75000 words of it and I'm proud of having completed it. I'm proud of the story I told. That doesn't mean I'm not scared to death now that several ARCs have been sent to bloggers. Real people whose opinions can sway potential readers for or against giving a new author a try. I hope I did well. I hope they like it. And in the meantime, I shall continue working because one thing I have learned in the world of fictional romance, everyone is waiting for their happy ending. I don't want to make Wes and Annie wait too long. Welcome to Wright's Holler.

Professionals Behaving Badly

It's been some time since I've felt a need to blog about anything but, I suppose I was inspired. Inspired isn't really the right word though. Through this community, I've met some lovely people: writers at all stages in their careers, bloggers of various following, cover designers and cover models who work hard to provide the image we try to describe with our words and readers who see all these groups as a collective whole, a haven of creativity that they can lose themselves in when the monotony of daily life in the "real world" takes its toll. In the last days, I've seen a disturbing surge in bad behavior in all of these groups. Authors being found as plagiarists, readers demanding free books and swag, bloggers cancelling events that had already collected fees and now the models, 4 in seemingly as many days acting as anything but the picturesque romance heroes we see them as.

Cover Reveal for "The Spirit"

Cover Reveal for "The Spirit"- the 1st book in The Tribe Novels by Harper L. Jameson

A witch.
But, the winter of 1836 hit the town of McAllen hard and with her people in danger of annihilation, Annie called on the spirits for the power to save them. Her desperation called Weshemoneto himself and when they collided, she had to make a choice: Lose her town or lose her heart.

What happened next would become the stuff of legend for centuries to come.
